Microdermabrasion - What does it mean?

by Gabrielle Rygh

Did you stumble upon the word microdermabrasion and wondered what it is? There seems to be a link to skin exfoliation and peeling. It is somehow related to scars, but its real definition is hard to decipher. Let's have a look at some microdermabrasion methods, how they work and which is best suitable for what kind of skin condition.

Different Microdermabrasion Techniques Explained

Beauty centers usually use crystal microdermabrasion machines, this was where the method was born. The microdermabrasion machine should be be handled by a specially trained person to avoid the risk of crystal inhalation. During the process the skin is being exfoliated, meaning the top loose skin cells are being scrubbed off by the tiny crystals shot onto the skin. Those hard, but very light are then sucked back into the tubing system together with the scrubbed off skin cells for disposal.

There are also many home microdermabrasion kits available nowadays. They contain a microdermabrasion cream and sometimes also a foam head and a wand for optimal application of the cream. A home microdermabrasion cream too, whereas corundum aluminum oxide micro-crystals are used preferably. The tiny crystals are the key ingredients which make microdermabrasion creams work similar like machine.

How to Use Microdermabrasion Creams

Before applying the microdermabrasion cream the skin should be washed with lukewarm water do soften it. Then, the cream is applied evenly and massaged into the skin for a few minutes with the hand piece or with the fingers. As final step, wash the cream away thoroughly and gently dry your skin.

Which Method you Should Use for your Personal Skin's Needs

Because of the pressure used to blast the crystals onto the skin and the hardness of the crystals, the microdermabrasion machine method is best suitable for deeper acne scars. However, because of the harshness of this treatment, if not carefully done by a trained and experienced person, it may, if your skin is very sensitive, also cause severe skin irritations.

Sodium bicarbonate crystals are preferred to treat acne in some beauty centers because of their antiseptic properties. If you consider consulting such a center there are two things to keep in mind is: Beauty centers can be very expensive and you should verify if the staff treating you is really a specialist and experienced!

Home microdermabrasion creams are easily handled and very effective, e. g. for moderate acne scarring. Those microdermabrasion creams are usually modestly priced.
