Water fountains exemplify a stand out element that sets them apart from the rest of water features. Fountains are often known for their ability to induce tranquility in the place where they are installed. They can function as interior and exterior decorations, or even as bird havens in the form of birdbaths. Regardless of their specific purposes and structures, one thing remains a fact; they will be used and improved for the years to come.

Researches have shown that from as far back as 3000 BC fountains have already been in use. In ancient Egypt, the use of these water features were documented through their tomb paintings, while in early Persian history they were utilized to symbolically represent paradise. Romans and Greeks on the other hand used both wall fountain and floor fountain as public bath areas and drinking stations and in China, where extensive courtyards were built, fountain sculptures were assigned as decorations. From these perspectives alone, it can be easily regarded that fountains play an important role in the establishment of ancient civilizations because they are essential water reservoirs.

Water fountains work through gravitational force, and such power could be achieved with the help of three important parts""reservoir, pump and fountain head. All fountains contain a reservoir from which they draw water and to which water flows back, creating a circulation. The pump moves the water coming from the reservoir through its spinning impeller that runs at an accelerated speed, which then causes the centrifugal force that pushes the water out of the pump. The water then goes to the fountain head and is sprinkled through the nozzle, cascades outside of the fountain and flows back into the reservoir.

Fountains come in differing forms and sizes; some of which could be used indoor or outdoors, while some are utilized for residential or commercial areas. The smallest of them are engineered to be placed on tabletops. Floor fountain is a stand-alone water feature that is often utilized as a statement piece either for wide indoor or outdoor spaces. Wall fountains, as their name connotes, are wall-mounted pieces. Meanwhile, garden fountains are large water pieces usually placed in wide outdoor spaces like piazzas or courtyard and are often in the forms of sculpted topiary and series of connected pools.

Using a fountain has many known health and wellness benefits. For instance, an indoor wall fountain, aside from being a decorative feature, could also become an important source of pleasure for those who sees it. The soothing sound of cascading water could induce relaxation, stress reduction and comfort that are not easily achievable especially in urban areas. Nonetheless, fountains could humidify and add moisture to rooms, which in turn cleans the air you breath, and at times could also function as drinking sources for pets.

All in all, water fountains are renowned water features that are consistently innovated and improved through the years. Since the ancient times until today they prevail as one of the most extraordinary man-made water features. Likewise, their various purposes make these pieces one of the most multifunctional articles of accents. It is not at all surprising that these water features are often used both in commercial and residential spaces.

Among many water features we are aware of, water fountains are probably the most appreciated. This is because of their distinct qualities that easily make them stand out among the crowd. A floor fountain for instance could easily become a stand alone feature that becomes the centerpiece of a piazza or a small garden. An indoor wall fountain on the other hand could easily transform a lifeless wall into the focal point inside the home.
